From the back cover: Federico Moreno Torroba was born in Madrid in 1891. His first teacher was his father, a well-known organist; later he became a student of the Madrid Conservatory under Conrado del Campo.
While he began as a composer of symphonic music, he soon turn to the two fields in which he acquired his fame: Music For Guitar and Music For The Theatrical Stage.
As a composer of guitar works he is best known through Andre Segovia who has recorded "Sonatina," "Madronos,' "Suite Castellana" and others. Today these works are in the repertory of most guitarists the world over.
But Torroba's fame today is mainly based upon the enormous success of his zarzuela. "Luisa Fernanda," for example, has had about 10,000 performances in Spain and South America. Others such as "La Chulapona," "Monte Carmelo," and "La Caramba" have been similarly successful.
Torroba is a many of many facets and abilities. He is considered one of Spain's leading conductors and arrangers, and the Government of Spain has placed him in charge of the Statesubventioned Temporada Del Genero Lirico, a project designed to keep the zarzuela alive on the stages of Spain. For several sessions he has been a highly successful guest conductor of the Orchestra of the Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires, and his tournees to Mexico, Cuba and Uruguay have further contributed to to Torroba's standing as today's foremost exponent of the "Zarzuela."
From Billboard - November 13, 1954: This collection of music from Spain, another in the firm's series of Spanish music, contains a group of light-hearted and unfamiliar dance and orchestral selections from various zarzuelas, of Spanish operates. Altho most of the items are little known here, they have been popular in Spain for years. They are played spiritedly and authentically. With the increasing popularity of Spanish music in this country it is probably that there will be a good-sized audience for this new collection of melodic zarzuela material.
