Trumpet's Greatest Hits Styled By Bobby Hackett

Memories Of You

Trumpet's Greatest Hits
Styled By Bobby Hackett
In A Setting Of Wall-To-Wall Strings
Cover Photo: Henry Parker
Epic STEREO BN 26155
1966

From the back cover: In the thirty-six years of his professional music career; Bobby Hackett has either worked with, jammed with, been compared to or cited as the model for all the instrumentalists whose works are represented here. This "trumpeters' trumpeter" has led traditional lineups, modern combos, sat in at knock-down, no-holds-barred jam sessions, held a featured sideman's chair in swing bands (two chairs in Glenn Miller's orchestra – guitar and trumpet – in the early Forties), conducted a major network studio orchestra, taken the spotlight in Jackie Gleason's huge string aggregation, toured in concert with Benny Goodman – and has made hit recordings in virtually every jazz and popular genre.

If any horn man has the credentials to launch a renaissance of these trumpet classics, Hackett has them. New arrangements for all the selections are the works of George Williams, who not so coincidentally was a star arranger for Glenn Miller when Miller was Hackett's boss, and now is with Ray McKinley and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The sessions recorded with Hackett, strings and rhythm were conducted by Johnnie Spence, one of Great Britain's best orchestra leaders, as distinguished for his conducting and arranging talents as for his authoritative use of a baton, a rarity in recording studios these days.

Careless On Cha-Cha-Cha

Pietro Deiro
Presents The Accordion Orchestra
Under The Direction Of Joe Biviano
Coral STEREO CRL 757323
1960

From the back cover: Following in his famous father's footsteps, Pietro Deiro, Jr. had dedicated his life to the accordion, pioneering such significant advances as the Accordion Orchestra. A composer and arranger whose counsel is sought by accordionists from coast to coast, he is credited with much of the progress the accordion has made toward attaining full recognition as a significant concert instrument.

World renowned teacher, composer, arranger accordion soloist Joe Biviano was the first accordionist to appear with the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metropolitan opera company. A distinguished concert artist, soloist and conductor for the N.B.C. and A.B.C. networks, he is a past President and current Vice President of the American Accordionists' Association.

The remainder of the unique orchestra represents a concentration of some of the most outstanding accordion talents in the country. They are: Tony Mecca, who has worked under such famous conductors as Leonard Bernstein. Alfredo Antonini and Raymond Scott; Joseph and Catherine Manzi, distinguished solo and duet concert accordionists; Eugene Ettore, well-known instrumentalist and conductor of the Sano Accordion Symphony; John Serry, who has worked under such eminent conductors as Alfredo Antonini, Mitch Miller, and Shep Fields; Orlando Di Girolamo, President of the Accordion Symphony Society; Alfonzo Veltri, Director of the National Conservatory of Music; John Blowers, famous jazz drummer and percussionist for the ensemble; Ruby Jamis, former first bass for the Columbia and Detroit Symphonies; Angelo Di Pippo, one of the foremost jazz accordionist in America; Val Dennis, music teacher and veteran of several Broadway musicals; Tony Ettore, governing member of the American Accordionist's Association; Joseph Fezza, Music Director of The Cliffside Park branch of the National Conservatory of Music; Peter Giradi, composer and noted soloist; and Robert Skilling, who, with his brother Chauncy has written and produced two musical comedies.

Godfrey Hirsch At Pete's Place, New Orleans

Love For Sale

Godfrey Hirsch At Pete's Place, New Orleans
Coral Records CRL 57475
1965

The instrument used on this Album is the "Musser Century Vibe" used exclusively by Godfrey Hirsch.

From the back cover: You know Godfrey Hirsch if you've ever seen Pete Fountain's group in action. He plays vibes, and his choreography for mallets is certainly something to behold. A great showman, he also makes an invaluable contribution to the ensemble in terms of color, and when the rhythm needs extra punch he shifts over to the second percussion chair to beat a snare drum.

As Pete's right-hand man, Godfrey works and lives a great deal of the time in Pete's Place, New Orleans. Indeed, when the boss is away on missions of importance, it is Godfrey who usually takes over his place. That's right. He takes Pete's place in Pete's Place. Pardon the emphasis.

Most of the performances on this record were made during Mardi Gras in 1964 and 1965, when Pete Fountain was out on the streets, not roistering or behaving in any unseemly fashion, but marching his music like a well-brought-up son of the Crescent City,

There were some musician guests down there for the festivities, and after a while they hied their weary feet to Pete's place of refreshment. You may have heard drummer Nick Fatool enjoying himself in 1964 on the earlier album, Pete's Place (57453), but this time there is another visitor, Eddie Miller. Not that Eddie is any newcomer to New Orleans, because he was born there. Normally, he is active on the West Coast, where he participates in many of those session which help to keep his hometown's jazz idiom alive, but here his tenor saxophone is heard instead of Pete's clarinet on three tracks.

Thus it is Pete's group, without Pete, but with guests, and headed by Godfrey Hirsch, that is ready to entertain you in this set. Many of the numbers are those used to introduce shows at the club before the clarinetist mounts the stand, and they roll with ease and fluidity in familiar routines, Eddie Miller fitting right in as though he were one of the regulars.
