Holiday For Strings

STEREO E3745

From Billboard - August 17, 1959: The lovely David Rose selections are given lush, romantic settings with the composer-conductor fronting his own ork. For late hour programming, this is an excellent LP. In stereo, the warm ork effects come across beautifully. Tempos are nicely varied. For easy-listening devotees. Selections include "Concerto," "One Love" and "Romantic Waltz." Beautiful cover.

Rusty York

Chuck Litterll

From the back cover: The tremendous response to the 1st album of clawhammer style banjo by Howard Wallace has brought about this 2nd album which retains the authenticity and the enthusiasm of Howard Wallace's unique style of playing.

Although the chord progression seems different from what you would expect to hear from a normal rendition of these old time songs, this is the way Howard Wallace learned most of these songs from his mother in the hills of North Carolina where he was born. Live music was a major source of entertainment when he was a boy and most of his friends could play some sort of stringed instrument. Howard's choice was the 5 string banjo. (A homemade one his mother used).

Some one once said, "If you want to get somebody in the mood for dancing or tapping their feet, the ring of the 5 string banjo will do it." Howard Wallace has that ring in this album.

As you spin this album the old time banjo tunes, let your memories return to yesteryear and beautiful mountain scenes, sunset valleys, and the familiar ring of the 5 string at the old barn dances that were held every Saturday night.

If you enjoyed the 1st Howard Wallace album as I certainly did (and according to the mail I received, so did a lot of my radio listeners) I'm sure you are going to enjoy this one. – Pappy Tipton (Pappy Tipton is a radio disc jockey and was voted Mr. Opry Dee Jay in 1964).

Dance Date - Buddy Morrow

Blue Prelude

Dance Date
Buddy Morrow and His Orchestra
Mercury Wing STEREO SRW 16102

From the back cover: The Morrow story is one that begins in poverty and because of persistence, today culminates in national fame. He was born in New Haven, Conn., in 1919 and at the age of twelve he received his first trombone as a birthday gift from his parents. One year later Buddy made his professional debut, playing at junior high school dances in his home town. By the time he was 15 he was being featured with the Yale Collegians at the then fabulous salary of $35 per week. Deciding to continue his music studies, he accepted a scholarship at the Julliard School of Music, and while he was still attending classes there he was heard by Paul Whiteman who immediately asked Buddy to join his band. Buddy accepted the offer and following his stay with Whiteman, he has played with some of the world's greatest bands, including Eddie Duchin, Artie Shaw, Vincent Lopez, Tommy Dorsey and Jimmy Dorsey, as well as being very much sought after to play trombone on recording sessions and radio programs. Morrow once said, "Don't try to educate the public from the bandstand, instead, play the type of music they want to hear."

Gene Krupa

"Murder," He Says

Gene Krupa

Colombia Records CL 753
1955

From the back cover: Gene's bands were always noted for their drive and enthusiasm, and they invariably had fine soloists and section men as well. This collection concentrates primarily on the period when Anita O'Day sang with the band, including the time when Roy Eldridge was blowing trumpet.

Anita O'Day's vocals were something special in that period of the Krupa band. She was pretty much in a class by herself as a band singer at that time; her energy and inventiveness communicated songs were off-beat novelties, often with jazz "hip talk" as their foundation. She even had a song without words (for most of the lyric, anyway) written especially for her by Kay and Sue Warner: That's What You Think.

However, it was in recordings like Let Me Off Uptown that Anita (in collaboration, in this and other performances with Roy Eldridge) helped popularize jazz slanguage. Kids of the day (1941) knew what you were talking about tif you said, "Blow-ho, Roy!" And if you had to ask where uptown is, you were tabbed as a square (This still goes!).

Her Nibs - Georgia Gibbs

Shoo Shoo Baby

Her Nibs
Georgia Gibbs
Vocal With Orchestra
Coral Records CRL 57183
1958

From the back cover: Oft bemoaned these days is the sad fact that great training ground of performers par excellent, the vaudeville stage is virtually no more. But fortunately for record buyers of the mid-twentieth century, some kids started in vaudeville so very, very young that they acquired the polish and perfection of that fabulous school, and yet find themselves at the very apex of their careers today. Such a kid in Her Nibs, Miss Georgia Gibbs.

For Her Nibs inveigled her way onto the stage of one of Boston's prime vaude houses, the Plymouth, while she was still in her early teens. Georgia had been singing on a little radio station in Worcester, Massachusetts, whence she hails, and her warbling had already attracted the attention of the Plymouth House manager, when she auditioned for the job.

Georgia acquired further finesse and technique in another of the greatest showman-singer-schools – the hard school of the bands – playing the location jobs, the one-nighters, etc. before the tough and demanding, right-on-the-top-of-you hip audiences. This was the school from which less than a handful of male singing stars (the Como, Sinatras, et al), and virtually no female songsters graduated. And Georgia was with the one of the very best bands – among others – the famed Will Hudson-Eddie DeLange combination, fronted by two of the brightest arranger-conductors the music world has ever known.

This was the incomparable school from which Her Nibs graduated with flying colors. But she matriculated into still a more difficult, yet a far more rewarding institution: Network radio comedy shows, as the featured girl vocalist, and lovely foil straightman, if you prefer, to some of the business' sharpest wits. She did regular stints on network radio, for example, with Jimmy Durante and Danny Kaye. And worked innumerable guest shots with such other top funnymen as Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Benny Youngman, Groucho Marx and many others. Working with the top comics gave Her Nibs a sense of timing, and a capacity to "read a line" with an impeccable correctness possessed by few other popular singers.

Ole! Ole! - Frederico Moreno Torroba

Ole! Ole!
Music of Spain for Orchestra
Orquesta Zarzuela de Madrid conducted by Frederico Moreno Torroba
Cover Art: Piedra Banca
Decca Glod Label Series DL 9736
1954

From the back cover: Federico Moreno Torroba was born in Madrid in 1891. is first teacher was his father, a well-known organist; later he became a student of the Madrid Conservatory under Conrado del Campo.

While he began as a composer of symphonic music, he soon turn to the two fields in which he acquired his fame: Music For Guitar and Music For The Theatrical Stage.

As a composer of guitar works he is best known through Andre Segovia who has recorded "Sonatina," "Madronos,' "Suite Castellana" and others. Today these works are in the repertory of most guitarists the world over.

But Torroba's fame today is mainly based upon the enormous success of his zarzuela. "Luisa Fernanda," for example, has had about 10,000 performances in Spain and South America. Others such as "La Chulapona," "Monte Carmelo," and "La Caramba" have been similarly successful.

Torroba is a many of many facets and abilities. He is considered one of Spain's leading conductors and arrangers, and the Government of Spain has placed him in charge of the Statesubventioned Temporada Del Genero Lirico, a project designed to keep the zarzuela alive on the stages of Spain. For several sessions he has been a highly successful guest conductor of the Orchestra of the Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires, and his tournees to Mexico, Cuba and Uruguay have further contributed to to Torroba's standing as today's foremost exponent of the "Zarzuela."

From Billboard - November 13, 1954: This collection of music from Spain, another in the firm's series of Spanish music, contains a group of light-hearted and unfamiliar dance and orchestral selections from various zarzuelas, of Spanish operates. Altho most of the items are little known here, they have been popular in Spain for years. They are played spiritedly and authentically. With the increasing popularity of Spanish music in this country it is probably that there will be a good-sized audience for this new collection of melodic zarzuela material.
