Chaino is one of the elusive figures of space age pop. After growing up in Chicago, Leon Johnson left home and lived a fairly wild life, eventually taking up the bongos and making a name for himself as "Chaino" (taken perhaps from the great Cuban conga player, Chano Pozo?) on the "chitlins" circuit of black nightclubs.

From Billboard - March 30, 1959: Liberty Records is re-releasing "Quiet Village," by Martin Denny. The disk (released as a single last October) suddenly showed up with heavy sales in Detroit three weeks ago, thereby prompting the label to re-release it nationally, including re-servicing of all radio stations.

The platter was originally featured in Denny's "Exotica" Volume 1 album. Meanwhile Denny, who just completed a six-week engagement at the Round Table here, opens at Bakers Keyboard Lounge, Detroit, this week, following which he plays a four-week date at London House in Chicago, starting April 15. He returns to Honolulu May 5, to resume a long-time run at Don the Beachcombers.

From the back cover: Martin Denny's music is becoming so famous it's a little pointless for me to tell you how wonderful it is. If you've already heard it you know, and if you haven't, stop reading this right now . . . put on the record and play it.

Now after you've asked, "How long has this been going on... how did I miss it... has he recorded other stuff as terrific as this" (he sure has) . . . you have become a full fledged member of his fan club. Welcome brother, and continue reading.

When you hit the road to "famesville" as Martin has, there's one big cross you have to bear the people who "knew you when?' The people who predicted a smash success on the first listen and haunt your life with reminders of how right they were... explanations of how you do it, how you thought of it and so on. . . an "I Was There" road company with a cast of thousands. There really was a horde of these Waikiki prophets, and I was one of them. We all talk about Martin at the drop of a hat, so what do you want to know?

Maybe you've wondered what-in-the-world kind of fellow is he to have cooked up these fantastic sounds. Maybe you have in mind a pale, aesthetic type who flutters his hands and uses mystic four-hundred-dollar words to describe what he is doing. Surprise ... he's a great big husky guy who looks like he could make bow knots out of iron bars. He is very shy, completely genuine and, first and foremost, a fine musician who plays piano like crazy.

Like many other great talents, he's not a talker but a doer. Having created a style and form of music that is unique and all his own, the next move was to surround himself with other musicians who "dug" what he was after and could play it.

I've given up trying to figure out how Martin thinks up this fabulous music, and I'm not so sure he knows himself. It sounds and feels the same every time, yet it is always brand new. . . fresh and exciting as if you'd never heard it before. And one last word from the Waikiki prophets: If you think this is good, hold your hats, there's a lot more to come. – John Sturges

From the back cover: This recording was miked by three Austrian made AKG microphones and recorded by a custom built Ampex three channel Stereophonic magnetic tape recorder using 1/2" recording tape. Cutting of both the stereophonic and monaural disc was done by Westrex cutting heads and a Sully atomically variable pitch blade in connection with specially designed amplifiers. Exact engineering, painstaking processing and careful quality control make possible nil distortion, 16 to 20,000 CPS frequency range and noise level of minus 60 DB. Pressings are custom pure-virgin vinyl. This recording is also available on Stereophonic HIFIRECORD and pre-recorded HIFITAPE for stereophonic playback.

From Billboard - November 17, 1962: The Limbo is all the rage as the dance of the moment and both kids and adults have taken to it. Here's a calypso group which plays a flock of familiar items in this genre, all with basically the same beat. You can limbo to  them all. At the same time, non-dancing fans who simply like calypso will find this combo to their liking. The well-known (for the most part) repertoire includes "Jamaica Farewell," "Sly Mongoose," "Mary Add" and "Man Smart, Woman Smarter." Can be a steady rack item, while the craze holds on.

From the back cover: Ataulfo Argenta was born at Castro Urdiales, Santander, in 1913. At the age of thirteen he entered the Conservatory of Madrid, where he won the Kristina Nilsson Prize enabling him to continue his musical studies in Belgium and Germany. In the latter country he was appointed professor of the piano at the Conservatory of Cassel before returning to Spain at the end of the Civil War.

In 1944 Argenta made his debut as an orchestral conductor, directing the Madrid Chamber Orchestra. The following year he directed the National Orchestra of Madrid with such success that in 1946 he was appointed its principal conductor. Since then he appeared with outstanding success in various European centers, including Paris, Rome and Vienna, and also toured South America. In the summer of 1952 he directed a most successful festival of Spanish music at Granada. He met a tragic death via a motor accident (January 1958) shortly after having completed the present recording.
