Moonlight In Vermont
Sentimental Journey
Ricardo Santos and His Orchestra
Polydor 46 082 LPHM
From the back cover: Ricardo Santos, a "stringed alias" for Werner Muller, is renowned the world over as being the foremost arranger and conductor of what we call "middlebrow" music. His early life was surrounded by music in Germany. It was his father's wish that he become a student of music, but on his own admission, he had no real taste for it. Being a student of the trombone, at a very early age he entered the Neidersachsen Orchestra.
His career was lost sight of during the war years. Immediately after he took up his activities again, this time as an instrumentalist, but mostly as an arranger. His next association was with the RIAS Dance Orchestra, which had produced, and still is producing, some of the top flight commercial musicians and vocalists. He later became director of this orchestra and the musical standard of which he brought out was commended in his early recordings. Always interested in the big band development, Muller was responsible for some amazing arrangements that backed the famous Caterina Valente.
His hobbies are complex and for a musician, strange. He has explored in Africa, is a student of reptiles and makes a study of mosquitoes and their habits. Interested in athletics, but in his own words, he says, "As against my early life, I have completely changed, because although I was disinterested at an early age, today my great love is music."
