Finger-Style Guitar
Chet Atkins
RCA Victor LPM 1383 RE
From the back cover: Chet first began developing his phenomenal technique more than twenty years ago in his home town in the craggy mountains of eastern Tennessee. Even as a young boy he was fascinated by every kind of music... fasciated and determined. His first instrument, he recalls, was a ukulele. "Didn't have much money for strings," says Chet, "but when one busted I'd just get wire off the porch screen and put it right in there." His fondest memory is the day he got his first guitar, when he was thirteen. He got it in an even swap for an old .42 pistol, and from here it looks like one of the shrewdest trades of the generation.
Since then, the guitar's done a lot for Chet. And Chet reasonably enough, has done a lot for the guitar and for guitarists. He's pioneered in developing new and superior instruments for one of the nation's leading guitar manufactures. He's authored a series of instruction volumes titles the Chet Atkins Guitar Methods Books. And, most of all, he's set a standard of taste and excellence for other guitarists to set their sights on. "Chet," say Jethro of the Homer and Jethro team, "is probably copied by more other people than any guitarist today, but nobody has the touch this boy has."
From Billboard - February 16, 1957 (original issue review): Country and western artist Chet Atkins is one of the best guitarists in the business – pop or c.&w. – and this album – his third for Victor – should pull down plenty of pop jockey play if exposed correctly. Selections – obviously aimed at pop market include such standards as "Liza," along with several old war horses of the light classical field – "Petite Waltz," "Gavotte In D," etc. Effective cover.
