From the back cover: As a child, Pepe possessed an innate musical talent, playing the piano by ear at the age of four, and receiving more orthodox tuition later at Mexico City's Conservatory of Music. But Pepe has not always been a professional pianist: he studied dentistry for twelve years at the University of Mexico, obtained a degree in banking and secretarial practice, and also spent several years working for a mining company. Then he left his home state of Chihuahua and settled in the capital, where a chance incident changed his whole life. To entertain a few friends, Pepe was playing the piano in the bar of the Ritz, Mexico City's most fashionable hotel, when the manager heard him and, refusing to believe that he was only an amateur, offered him the job of performing regularly at his hotel.
Three years passed before Pepe left the Ritz Bar and moved to a smart new restaurant – El Quid. By this time he was a regular performer on radio and television and had also made a name for himself as a first-rate accompanist to visiting singers. Later he sailed for Europe and, in early 1958, reached London where he made several appearances on television and radio, and cut his first British record for Parlophone Records – a successful long-player entitled "Mexico Tropicale" (PMC 1080). This was soon to be followed by "Mexican Magic" (PMC 1100), "Mexican Fiesta" (PMC 1126) and now "Salud Mexico".
