Hawaii Calls Waikiki! - Webley Edwards

How D'ya Do

Hawaii Calls: Waikiki!
Presented by Webley Edwards
Recorded on the beach at Waikiki
With Al Kealoha Perry
Capitol Records T772
1957

From the back cover: Versatile Webley Edwards, who for twenty-one years has been broadcasting his world-famous "Hawaii Calls" radio show from Waikiki Beach, selected the songs, and the Islands' leading Hawaiian Singers – those on his show – perform them. A new singer makes her debut in this album, a young full-blooded Hawaiian girl with the improbable name Kahaunaniomaunakeakauiokalewa Kahalewai. Understandably, her friends and admires have shortened the name. They call her Haunani. Al Kealoha Perry directs the entire group in this gay, lyrical piece of Waikiki, the loveliest of all possible beaches.

From Billboard - January 26, 1957: Attractive, luring package will sell this, altho one must search for any authenticity in the performances. It's highly Americanized Hawaiian music, with slick chorus singing in English, and enough of the sliding sounds to appeal to many c.&w. buyers. Set was produced by Webley Edwards, of the "Hawaii Calls" radio show from Waikiki Beach. Much of the material is standard.
