From the back cover: With the presentation of this special recording, LIFE takes great pleasure in extending an added invitation to you – to re-join us in the TIME-LIFE Room on the evening of November 14th, 1961, for the soirée in honor of the 53rd annual meeting of the Grocery Manufactures Association – and though this "live", on-the-spot recording, you are cordially invited to again be our guest... and again enjoy the evening's entertainment with this, your personal souvenir album.

The occasion being a special one, LIFE presented a special show to highlight the affair, starring The Four Saints (in their first New York appearance) and featuring the music of the John Scott Orchestra. Having completed a four-year "engagement" with the United States Air Force only last May, The Four Saints are currently being hailed as one of the most versatile and truly unique new musical groups to hit the show business scene in recent years. Comprised of John Howell (who organized the original group eleven years ago), Bob Erickson, Jerry DuChene and Doug Evans, they have an entirely fresh approach to music and entertaining, performed with such vitality and enthusiasm, based on each member's extensive musical training, that their expert showmanship belies their youth. The Saint's 25-year young leader, John Howell, plays a total of 16 instruments and creates all the instrumental and vocal arrangements for the group; Jerry DuChene, lead tenor voice, has a background array of musical honors from various musical competitions, having played in symphony orchestras, concert bands and dance bands and like the other members, is equally at home performing several instruments; Bob Erickson, who also sings tenor, is the "Lou Costello" of the foursome, contributing much of the material an staging of their comedy routines and handles five instruments with dexterity; Doug Evans, the "old man" of the grou (he's26!), handles the emcee-ing chores, heads their vocal department's bass-ment along with his accomplished playing of five instruments, and displays a rare gift for comedy pantomime. A multi-faceted musical act – utilizing numerous instrumental techniques, close-knit vocal harmonizations that run the gamut from barbershop to ultra-modern, and threaded with a distinctive and refreshing comedy style – The Four Saints are a rare talent combination which creates a delightful and indelible entertainment experience.

Providing orchestral background for The Saints, as well a the dinner-and-dance tempos for the evening, is The John Scott Orchestra. Featuring five brass, five saxes and three rhythm, John Scott's thirteen piece aggregation is one of the few remaining "big bands" which performs for a variety of public and private affairs throughout the metropolitan area. And – like The Four Saints – the Scott organization is also a unique unit. All former professionally-performing musicians, its members are now occupied in various professions ranging from advertising, engineering – but in maintaining the orchestra as a unit, Scott and his men continue to enjoy their "first love" by providing dance music for all types of local functions.
