From the back cover (TOPS issue): Porgy And Bess, the first authentic American opera, looms as a fabulous legend of the modern world. Internationally recognized as one of the greatest musical works ever written, and probably the most enduring American music ever con- ceived, it evokes in all, images warm and colorful-of primitive simplicity, yet basic complexity-redolent of a brassy beauty and intriguing passion.

This unique music drama which was nurtured to explosive life by the late George Gershwin, was based on the best-selling novel, Porgy, by DuBose Heyward. In close collaboration with George Gershwin on the folk-opera were his brother, Ira, and Mr. Heyward, both of whom proved themselves brilliant librettists.

In all, Gershwin's crowning achievement took eleven months to compose and nine months to orchestrate, seeing completion in 1935 and standing before the world as a lasting monument to his genius. It remains, especially, a powerful tribute to the country of its origin. Whenever the company has toured overseas, the opera and its cast have won wild acclaim. Universal reaction was perhaps perfectly expressed by a leading Viennese critic in describing Porgy And Bess as "the best ambassador for America." In 1952 the troupe made a triumphal tour of Europe under the auspices of the U. S. State Department, still later enjoying Government sponsorship and overwhelming accolade on tours of the Middle East and Latin America.

Small wonder that at last this eminent stage success has been brought to the screen by Samuel Goldwyn Productions where the ultimate medium of motion pictures may invest the production with broader dimensions and new incendiary excitement. A stellar cast has been assembled for the film, including Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge in the title roles, with Sammy Davis, Jr. playing Sportin' Life and Pearl Bailey as Maria.

Now, to meet increasing demand for the best from Porgy And Bess, TOPS Records has engaged the prominent conductor-arranger, John T. Williams, who leads The Hollywood Grand Studio Orchestra in brilliant rendition of beloved songs from the folk-opera. With characteristic sensitivity, Mr. Williams has accorded each number the treatment warranted by virtue of its modern classicism.

Also brought to the public in this superb high-fidelity recording are beautiful vocal interpretations by some of the finest young talent on the scene today, including Bill Reeve, Norma Zimmer, Bill Lee, Marni Nixon and Earl Wilkie.

This album is destined to become one of the most frequently played recordings in anybody's collection. It was designed for your complete listening pleasure so here, for you to enjoy, Porgy And Bess.
