Duet - Stan Kenton & June Christy

Angel Eyes

Duet
Kenton Christy
Stan Kenton & June Christy
Capitol Records T656
1955

From the back cover: One day back in 1945, when Stanley Kenton was looking for a new vocalist, he auditioned and hired blonde and blue-eyed Shirley Luster of Decatur, Illinois, and introduced her to the musical world as June Christy. Band dates, concerts and tours, splits and reunions followed in dizzying sequences as Stan and June pursued their ambitious careers. But until now, there has been no real opportunity to hear what these two sound like all alone – undistracted by hot and cool saxes, volcanic rhythm sections and stratospheric brass. This time, not even an arranger is around to complicate their lives. The total effect is unexpected, ingenious, and refreshing.

From Billboard - November 5, 1955: A great many pop as well as jazz buyers will be attracted to this distinctive program of intimate, jazz-oriented vocal stylings by the one-time Kenton vocalist. Kenton at the piano is the sole accompanist, and while he isn't the most fluid pianist, his Ellington-like chordings are sympathetic. The titles include fairly obscure show tines and off-beat ballads, and Miss Christy turns in the warmest work we have heard from her. The people who have been buying Chris Connor should take just as quickly to her model.
