From the back of the front lid: Ravel's score employs a large orchestra: triple woodwind, plus an E flat clarinet, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones and tuba, fifteen percussion instruments including celesta and pianoforte, harp and strings. But the magnificent opulence with which he formerly used such forces in, for example, Daphnis et Chloe gives way in Ravel L'Efant et les Sortilèges to an almost chamber-orchestral refinement which omits every unnecessary note of colour. In this it is closely allied to the aesthetic of works like the 'Cello Sonata (1920 - 22) and the Chansons Madecasses (1925 - 26)
