From the back cover: Tunes of Christmas" are the songs from the warm heart and creative talent of Ruth Lyons... A combination which has produced one of the most remarkably suc- cessful careers in show business. And writing songs has always been a part of this career. The songs of this album have long been an integral part of the WLW-Television and Radio Program, "50-50 Club". Each year Ruth Lyons has written a new Christmas song as a part of her unprecedented 'Christmas Fund' Drive - which has made it an honest-to-goodness Christmas for children in hospitals throughout the Mid-West for many years. Now here are some of the beautiful and provocative songs for you as you have learned to love them - sung by those who - through the years - have become indentified with them. Cliff Lash and His Orchestra provide the musical accompaniment, augmented by strings and harp. The orchestra belongs to the regular "50-50 Club" family. Each member is a competent and versatile musician. Cliff Lash is featured at the piano, Clayton Mooar doubles on trumpet and french horn, Eddie Bennett is on trombone, Jack Crowder and William Wibbler handle both saxophone and clarinet, Bobby Keys is on guitar, Barney Yelton bass, Jack Volk - drums, and Bob Baker is guest xylophonist. Ruth Lyons is the organist. The album's fine instrumental and vocal arrangements are by Cliff Lash and Teddy Rakel.
And so here are the "Ten Tunes of Christmas" each one of them bringing a warm and sincere wish from all who have written, played, and sung them in this album ... to wish a 'Merry, Merry Christmas' to you and yours.

ReplyDeleteWhat a coup this was to own all Ruth Lyons' Christmas music on ONE CD!!! Something from my dreams............and the music is dreamy, too. It certainly takes me back to my childhood home in Kettering, Ohio, mid-50s to late-60s. I'll never forget Ruth and the "50-50 Club" cast that made life seem warm and cozy, like a big hug. Rest in peace, "Mother"!
ReplyDeleteMY friends father played music for Ruth in the early 1950's his name was Vernon Gilchrist from Indpls. Was hoping to find a clip of him any help??
