Recorded at RCA Victor's Music Center of the World, Hollywood, California
RCA Victor LSP-2341
1961

From Billboard - May 1, 1961: Here's an album of warm, sensuous Latin-American songs sung by the Norman Luboff Choir with taste and feeling, sided by attractive arrangements. The songs include "Perfidia," "Jungle Drums," "Adios" and "Maria Elena," among other favorites. The mood is lush, and yet subdued, so that it could be played for background entertainment or for enjoyable listening. A lyrical new disk that could turn into a steady seller.

Flamenco Fantasy - Sabicas

Llanto Minero

Sabicas
Flamenco Fantasy
Produced by Eddie Heller
MGM Records E3859
1960

From the back cover: Sabicas, today the recognized master of the Flamenco Guitar, was born in 1917 in Pamplona, Spain. At the age of five he began to play the guitar. Without any formal instruction, just by "doing what comes naturally", he soon attracted attention in his home town and, at the age of eight, he gave his first recital before the experts, the "aficionados" of Pamplona. His proficiency developed rapidly. At the age of eleven he was ready for his first great trial: he entered a nation-wide contest in Madrid and, a boy of eleven, walked off with one of the important prizes. Several years of recitals and performances throughout his native country followed until he formed his own Flamenco Company and embarked on his first tour to South America.

He triumphed in everyone of the capitals and his fame spread. Then he met with Carmen Amaya, then at the height of her artistic career, and the two joined together for a number of most successful years and triumphs in Mexico and the United States. A number of films in Mexico and Hollywood, recordings, TV appearances, and finally a command performance at the White House were the mark stones of their road. – Fred Reiter

Voices In Fun - The Four Freshmen

Swinging On A Star

Voices In Fun
The Four Freshmen
Arranged and Conducted by Billy May
Produced by Voyle Gilmore
Capitol Records ST 1543
1961

From the back cover: As their fans know, the Frosh (Bill Comstock, Ross Barbour, Ken Albers, Bob Flanigan – left to right in the cover photo) often help provide their own backing. But this time save for solos – Bob on trombone, Ken on trumpet – their instruments remain cased. Into the vacuum pours Billy May with a musical wit that finds a capricious partner in Dick Reynold's vocal arranging. Their partnership is tighter knit than most, because Dick wrote the first vocal chorus of each song as a departure point for Billy, who then voiced his orchestrations along the same lines, and finished the vocal arrangements.

From Billboard - May 8, 1961: Billy May's arrangements and kicking band support the Four Freshmen and their vocal pyrotechnics on this highly enjoyable album. The set is composed of very hip and humor-filled interpretations of hit and standard tunes of the past. "Ole Buttermilk Sky," "Happy Talk" and "I Want To Be Happy" give some idea of the variety of material. In addition there's a pretty and unusual treatment of "Mañana."

A Night In Spain - Whittemore & Lowe

Granados

A Night In Spain
Whittemore and Low - Duo Pianists
Produced by Richard Jones
Back Cover Photo: Chuck Stewart
Capitol Records SP8500
1959

From the back cover: Arthur Whittemore and Jack Lowe first met at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where both were scholarship students in composition. They became good friends and often played two-piano music together. When vacationing in San Juan, Puerto Rico, they gave a concert which was such an astonishing success that, after returning home, they decided to concentrate on a joint concert career. They made their official debut at New York's Town Hall in 1940.

Now top ranking in their field, Whittemore and Lowe are in constant demand as soloists with America's leading orchestras, and they invariably have an enthusiastic audience for their annual coast-to-coast recital tours. Their superb duo-playing and stimulating programs have placed them in the vanguard of American concert attractions. In their recitals and concert appearances, Whittemore and Lowe have pioneered, playing contemporary music as well as works from their broad repertoire of classics. They have commissioned several works from contemporary composers, including Ernst Krenek and Morton Gould, and they have the exclusive performance rights for Quincy Porter's Concerto for Two Pianos, which won the 1954 Pulitzer Prize for music.

From Billboard - November 16, 1959: This disk is a prime example of superior musicianship. Whittemore and Lowe, noted duo-pianists, offer excellent performances and fine readings of six compositions reflecting various aspects of Spain. Program includes Falla's "Ritual Fire Dance," Lecuona's "Malaguena," Ravel's "Bolero," and an interesting piano version of violinist's Kreisler's "La Gitana." Top item for collectors.

Albeniz: Triana (from Iberia)
Granados: The Maiden and the Nightingale
Falla: Jota / Nana (from Seven Spanish Folk Songs)
Ritual Fire Dance (from El Amor burro)
Lecuona: Melaguena (from Andalucia)
Kreisler: La Gitana
Ravel: Piece en forme de habanera / Bolero

Dixieland Dance Date - Red Nichols

Satan Takes A Holiday

Dixieland Dance Date
Red Nichols And The Five Pennies
Produced by Bill Miller
Capitol Records  T1297
1960

From the back cover: The group that performs them here so admirably includes versatile Bobby Hammack at the piano, Bill Wood on clarinet, drummerman Rollie Culver, Pete Beilmann, Sr., playing those good things on trombone, and the incomparable Joe Rushton, Jr., whose mighty bass sax sounds the full, reedy bottom notes that have become a Red Nichols trademark.

From Billboard - February 8, 1960: A couple of traditional Dixieland offerings are included, plus standards like "September Song" and "My Funny Valentine." The latter type receive the benefit of delicate and imaginative arrangements and are much more effective than the quasi-Dixieland. Nichols' old following plus new fans derived from his recent film biography can make this a profitable item.
