The Talents Of Bud Shank

You Don't Know What Love Is

The Talents Of Bud Shank
Kimberly Records Jazz Series 2025
1962

From Billboard - March 31, 1962: Precision Radiation Instruments Corporation, which is responsible for Tops Records, has issued a flock of jazz disks on its low price Kimberly label. LP's comprise jazz items previously issued on the World Pacific and Pacific Jazz labels. Front line artists like Chet Baker, Bud Shank, Hoagy Carmichael, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton, Bobby Brookmeyer, and Paul Bryant make up the first batch of 10 albums.

For the jazz trade, the low price and high quality of material should prove a potent factor in sales. Among the albums some of the top names in West Coast type jazz are magnificently represented as sidemen. Among them are Art Pepper, Shelly Manne, Curtis Amy, Jim Hall, singer Annie Ross, Freddie Gambrell and Russ Freeman.

Ames Brothers Concert

Blue Prelude

Ames Brothers Concert
Coral Records High Fidelity CRL 57031
1956

From the back cover: This collection once more proves the versatility of this amazing quartet. The group now known as the Ames Brothers are the youngest of nine children. They are in chronological order: Joe, Gene, Vic and Eddie – all of them still in their twenties. All of them went through the usual schooling. Joe and Ed went on to Boston Latin School; Joe also studied engineering at UCLA. But when he resumed his studies at Boston University, he found that music was to  be the career he wanted most.

Meanwhile the three younger boys had organized a quartet which included a friend, and they toured around New England. When the friend took sick, Joe – who had auditioned for the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and had just finished an engagement singing Mozart in Montreal – decided to join them.

Their first real break came when they went up to Leeds Publishing Company in search of an old song called "Should I," which their mother had suggested their rediscovering. Milt Gabler happened to walk into the office and heard them sing. He was so impressed that he had them cut a few sides for Decca just before January, 1948. The following year the Ames Brothers were the first artists to record for Coral Records. Their recordings swept into national top billing with their first huge hit record, "Rag Mop," in January, 1950.

The Ames Brothers' career in radio has been as sensational as on records. They have appeared in connection with many different types of entertainment and have been uniformly successful in everything they have undertaken.

From Billboard - February 11, 1956: The foursome has put together a representative and most salable assortment of a dozen tunes for this package and no doubt dealers will move plenty of copies. Most of the group's biggest past hits are here, including "Sentimental Me," "Can Anyone Explain," "Rag Mop" and "Undecided." Shapes up as an active entry among both retailers and jockeys.
