Les Elgart And His Orchestra
Columbia CL 1567

From the back cover: This exciting new collection presents the Elgart complement of three trumpets, three trombones, five saxes and rhythm in a dozen arrangements as modern as tomorrow. The Latin tempos of Side One add rhythmic spice to the mellow Elgart sound, and the interplay of ballads and swingers on Side Two provides a perfect balance for your listening pleasure.

The Big Beat Sound Of James Last

Caravan
The Big Beat Sound Of James Last
And The American Patrol
Volume 3
Warner Bros. 1714

From the back cover: A word about the dauntless leader of the American Patrol himself. James Last was born in Bremen, Germany, a town noted more for its shipyards than musicians. Nevertheless, by the time short pants were exposing his dimpled knees, James Last was knocking hell out of the family piano and, after three years of lessons, ticking off the classics with remarkable ease. Sent to music school when he was fourteen, he hung around long enough to absorb a foundation of theory and harmony, than exited dragging his favorite instrument, the bass behind him. Turning on with jazz, he grooved for a while with hometown groups, and from 1950 to 1953 won hands down the title of top bass player in the prime German jazz poll. He organized his first band at Radio Bremen, and after some local success quit the so-called sticks for a crack at the big time of Hamburg. There, with the lighting speed of a slick white Porsche, his career took off. Arranging and conducting for some of the top talents in Europe. Writing smash songs such as Games That Lovers Play. Hitting solidly with his one and only American Patrol.

Found in the $1 bin at one of my record shop stops… this one is worth picking up. Since the audio can be found on YT and Amazon, I decided not to post an example here. If I did, I'd post side one which is basically one long track that plays through like a concept piece. Some folks aren't going to dig it… the vocal passages may jar the senses. Since I don't speak the language, the vocals are just another instrument to me. Personally, I like the unexpected contrasts and the drama in piece.

And, if you find the album, you'll find yourself an expensive piece of printing. The jacket is a gatefold job with a fixed glossy unusually cropped glossy color multi-page insert that features images and lyrics.
