From the back cover: The soulful style that has become the King Curtis trademark started to develop when he joined his junior high school band in his home town of Fort Worth, Texas. He had originally played alto sax, but he switched to tenor when an opening occurred in the band. When he entered high school he started his own combo and is soon achieved great popularity in Fort Worth. He practiced every spare moment and still managed to maintain a superior high school average, so high in fact that he was offered several college scholarships.

King turned them all down to accept an offer from Lionel Hampton to tour with his band. On tour with Hamp, constantly learning, performing and practicing, King's road led to New York. In the big city King Curtis studied theory and harmony with a private teacher and started to play with some of the great musicians in New York. It was during this period that he started to record as a sideman on record sessions.

King Curtis' sax work so impressed recording men that he soon became the most wanted sideman in the business. He played on over 200 records, performing with such stars as Bobby Darin, The Coasters, Connie Francis, The McGuire Sisters, Sam Cooke, Andy Williams and Nat "King" Cole. He formed his own group for personal appearances and built a tremendous following for himself on the night club circuit. He and his band were called upon to back the top-name rhythm and blues, rock and roll and pop acts appearing at the New York Paramount, Brooklyn Fox and Apollo Theaters in New York. Soon he was making hit recordings of his own. – Bob Rolontz
