From the back cover: Some lines about our featured artist (Stanley Black) would not be amiss in this concluding paragraph. For over a decade now the London-born musician has been one of the brighter stars in the popular music firmament. The film world claimed him in his early twenties and to date he has provided music for over fifty films. A classic Overture To A Costume Comedy based on music for a film of the Regency period has been recorded on Decca LW 5325 by the L.S.O. under Pierino Gamba. Stanley Black became a nationally known figure as director of the BBC Dance Orchestra, a post which he occupied with distinction from 1944 - 52. Whilst with the BBC Stanely achieved several successes, no more lasting than the intriguing interval music – for the most unusual combinations – which he wrote for the Light Programme. A catalog of his achievements would have to include the 1951 Royal Command Variety Show, his membership of the Grand Order of Water Rats, the 'Off The Record' shows for BBC television, the tag tunes for commercial TV, his tasteful accompaniments for top-line artists and above all, his many splendid albums for Decca. These latter have served to spread the name of Stanley Black far and wide and the 'Black Magic' is nowhere more appreciated than in the United States. One has almost forgotten to mention that Stanley Black is a leading authority on Latin-American music, and no record collector can afford to ignore such albums as Cuban Moonlight (LK 4115) and Sophisticat In Cuba (LK 4234). – Douglas Pudney
