The Way-Out Voices Of Lambert, Hendricks And Ross

Halloween Spooks
The Way-Out Voices Of Lambert, Hendricks And Ross
With The Ike Isaacs Trio
Formerly Titled "High Flying With Lambert, Hendricks And Ross
Columbia Jazz Odyssey
Stereo 32 16 0292

From the back cover: In the natural course of events, the trio scored one smashing success after another in such jumping night spots as San Francisco's hungry i, Chicago's Blue Note, the Crescendo in Los Angeles, the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, and at every big jazz festival from Newport to Monterey. And they swept every jazz poll in sight, coming in first in Down Beat readers' and critics' polls and in polls conducted by Playboy and Metronome.

Then, in 1962, during a European tour, Annie Ross became ill and was forced to retire to her native England. A new girl singer was taken on, but in 1964, Dave Lambert decided to leave the group. Soon, Jon Hendricks resumed his activities as a single. Eventually, Annie Ross became a top single in Europe and even operated her own jazz club in London. In 1966, Dave Lambert died.

The team of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross is no more, but their once-in-a-lifetime perfect blend of personal and artistic elements lives on in recordings. In this album, some critics felt that their unique talents reached their fullest expression. Here, in addition to songs by other famous jazz writers, are songs created by the trio: :"The New ABC" and "Halloween Spooks" by Lambert; "With Malice Toward None" by Hendricks; and "Farmer's Market" by Ross. But originality in performing material of any authorship was what mad them the swing ingest jazz group ever to make Birdland bounce – it's also what makes this album an exciting tribute to the great Lambert, Hendricks and Ross.
