Reno Plays Nevada - Reno Tondelli

Nostalgia

Reno Plays Nevada
A New Jazz Sound
Stephen LR8002
1960

Reno Tondelli - Accordion (by Italo American Accordion, Co.)
Howard Stanley - Guitar and French Horn
Norm Jeffries - Drums and Vibes
Don Kruswick - Clarinet, Flute and Bass Clarinet
Jim Palacek - Bass (1st session)
Jim Atlas - Bass (2nd session)

From the back cover: Norm Jeffries and I were old army buddies, so when he sent me a sample of Reno's new long playing album I gave it my full attention. I found that, though nothing starling or earth shaking was in evidence, a great deal of precision and good taste was. Too often, in searching for unusual effects, small combos lose all sense of form and balance. Such was not the case with Reno and his boys. Each rendition of each song in the collection could serve as a blueprint for a big band arrangement, and though this thoughtful approach to small group instrumental music may rob it of a possible pixiness and unpredictability, nevertheless, I found the group's arrangements immensely comforting and reassuring. All in all, a very worthwhile addition to anyone's record collection. – Nelson Riddle
