From the back cover: The name and pleasing voice of Edna Gallmon Cooke have been known to radio listeners throughout the nation for many years. This popular artist has consistently brought to lovers of gospel music God-given messages in song-singing what she feels and believes. Edna, known to many as Mme. Cooke, began singing at the age of three. She traveled for several years with her father, the Reverend Eddie J. Gallmon, assisting in revivals and regular church work. She was a public school teacher and has devoted much time to the organization and direction of choirs and choral groups. During a choir rehearsal she was given her first opportunity to record. Her initial release was "Angels, Angels", in which she was presented with the young people's choir of Springfield Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. Since that first waxing she has enjoyed increasing success in the recording world and, through public appearances, is widely known for her stirring messages of faith and hope.

From the inside cover: In this collection... Doc is heard in a fresh and unusually inviting setting. His band is a medium-sized group that is partly geared toward a thoroughly contemporary sound through the presence of three guitars (Tony Mottola, Al Casamenti and Bucky Pizzarelli) and a remarkably strong and versatile rhythm section (Dick Hyman playing piano and organ, Bob Haggart on bass, either Ed Shaughnessy, Osie Johnson or Bobby Rosengarden on drums and a percussion team that includes at various times Shaughnessy, Phil Kraus and Artie Marotti). But the group also includes a four-man trombone ensemble (Bob Alexander, Wayne Andre, Harry DiVito and Paul Faulise with Lou McGarity sitting in for Andre on three pieces) which provides a rich and sturdy off-setting cushion for the fire and brilliance of Doc Severisen's trumpet.

Barber himself is a versatile and soft-spoken chap who is alternately heard, on this long-playing presentation, as piano soloist, violin soloist, viola soloist and flute soloist. His ensemble comprises four violas, cello, piano and two woodwinds. There are no saxophones, no trumpets, no drums.

This is an outstanding, if not brilliant, example of period mood music. Note in the copy below that Phineas improvised his work on this LP. Farnon offers the orchestrated foundation, that seems to pull Phineas and his "jazz riffs", time and time again back to the "theme" of the record. The two creatives never seem to fight for attention, the blend seems perfect.

From the back cover: As Dennis says: Phineas Newborn's exciting style and amazing harmonic sense can't help but thrill the layman and professional alike. In recording this album, Phineas busy working schedule prevented us from working closely together in advance, with the result that the string arrangements were completely written when Phineas arrived in Hollywood to record. I personally feel this was the best thing that could have happened, as each side of this album is complete improvisation on Phineas' part. Working with Phineas has been the most thrilling experience I have had in years.
