Lonely Night - Eddie Calvert

What Is This Thing Called Love?
Lonely Night
Eddie Calvert
The Man With The Golden Trumpet
With Norrie Paramor
His Strings And Orchestra
Capital Records T10007
1956

Nice cover that nicely sets the tone for the music.

Also check out the Calvert 10 inch, "I Love" on Essex.

From the back cover: The Man With The Golden Trumpet, England's Eddie Calvert, needs little introduction to U.S.A. and Canada listeners.

Calvert has conceived a powerful, emotion-packed album with "Lonely Night." Playing his soulful solo trumpet against the rich and resonant orchestra of Norris Paramor, Eddie achieves the moods and vagaries of a lonesome lover with sensitively performed arrangements of the best of Cole Porter, Vernon Duke, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, and other topflight composers – all best this twentieth century has yet produced.

Not all of Calvert's playing is depictive of unrequited love, moreover. For no matter how blue the night, how alone the lover, Calvert's music reflects the unflagging optimism and hope that all sweethearts hold dear. "Falling In Love With Love" is a prize example. In Calvert's skilled hands this classic Richard Rodgers melody adds warmth – brightness – to the "Lonely Night" atmosphere.

Calvert's life has always centered around music, and musicians. His father was a Preston cobbler who played cornet in the village brass band. At 5, Eddie started music lessons. Throughout World War II he piloted a tank in the British Army. Discharged with an injury, Eddie first began to attract attention in music as featured trumpet soloist with the Joe Loss orchestra in London.

Then came his first records, in 1951, for the British Columbia label all under his own name. Not yet 35, Eddie by now has dominated the best selling record charts for several years not only in England, but in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. In the vast North American market his "Oh Main Papa" sold in excess of one million copies.

Now, Eddie Calvert offers his first long-playing album to further establish his golden trumpet. "Lonely Night" reflects just that, a lonely night, and the music that flowingly emanates from the compatible Calvert-Paramor collaboration carefully depicts the long and lonely nocturnal hours experienced by everyone who has loved, or been loved.

Stanley Applewaite Plays In The Still Of The Night

Long Ago And Far Away

Stanley Applewaite Plays
In The Still Of The Night
Music Of Cole Porter
George Norman Orchestra
Cover Photo By Philip Lustig
Design DLP 36
1957

From the back cover: When you think of the greats of the music world you never have to spend too long pondering before the name Cole Porter skyrockets across your mental skies. Taking his place with the other greats of our modern music scene, men like Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Dick Rodgers, Larry Hart and Oscar Hammerstein, Cole Porter personifies smart, easy to listen to popular music. His lyrics, without having the more intricate quality that Larry Hart seemed to favor, flow like honey from the vine. When combined with his often lovely, often enchanting, and often spirited music they are an unbeatable combination. Even the simplest... Like the lyric to "All Of You"... and how many of us have listened to that one and said... "Gee, I could have written that lyric"!

Why not?... I love the west of you**** the rest of you... or... the south of you**** the mouth of you simple... Sure it's simple... but it is also true poetry, and after all that's the test of a fine lyric... If you can read it as a poem and it stands up... It's a good lyric... Try that on most of today's music and you will find that the words lose context without the music Try it with a Cole Porter or Larry Hart lyric and find that each lyric will stand by itself for context, flow, meter... and ... most importantly, each line will tell its story.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

DESIGN RECORDS are very proud to present the first American recordings of one of England's most talented and versatile composer-conductor-arrangers. Stanley Applewaite' has conducted some of the finest and most popular orchestras on the continent and has a reputation second to none as an arranger of popular and semi-classical music.

Born in Sheffordshire in 1925, this young pianist made his professional debut at the local music hall at the tender age of nine. He played piano and recited "The Ballad of Lower Ipswich," a twenty minute long piece of saccharine prose written by his great uncle Harry Applewaite. The short piano selection was met with an enthusiastic response. The long dissertation concerning the problems of a horsecarman in Lower Ipswich was greeted with nothing but a dull lull. At that moment young Stanley decided that music was a far more satisfying life than acting, reciting (certainly a lost art), or even following in his great uncle's footsteps and writing. We are inclined to agree. Harry Applewaite is certainly not ranked with the literary elite of the British Commonwealth. His great nephew, Stanley, is now a household name throughout the provinces. He is currently conducting the Norton Green Symphonia and has recently signed to score and conduct a new musical movie based on the life of Henry the Eighth. – ROY FREEMAN

From the back cover: Murray Narell, the father of the first and second lead players, is a social worker who was the director of "Operation Street Corner" at Lower East Side settlement house. He saw in steel drums – the making and playing of them – a way to channel the vast energies of street gangs into constructive ends. In a short time, twenty different bands composed of boys and girls of various ages were making music within the walls of the settlement house. Eventually, some of the bands went out into the community to give benefit performances, to gather applause and give pleasure to their friends and neighbors. Other settlement houses followed suit.

Echoing Voices And Trombone - Don Costa

Echoing Voices And Trombones
Don Costa
Arranged and Produced by Don Costa
Ultra Audio WWS 8501

From the notes: This album was one of the biggest challenges Costa ever faced As Costa states it, "I didn't want to record merely another percussion album. Instead I tried to create a truly exciting musical album, one that would be a pleasure to listen to for its musical ideas, as well as one that would interest hi-fidelity and stereo fans. In this album I used voices as a section of the orchestra and treated them as I would treat the brass or reed section of a large band.

Don Costa - Leader
Bob Rosengarden, Don Lamond Terry Synder and Jerry Bruno - Drums
Moe Wechsler - Piano
George Devens and Joseph Venuto - Percussion
Al Caiola and John Piaazrelli - Guitar
