From the back cover: The most frequent (and dubious) com- pliment to the score of a film is "It must have been good-I didn't even know it was there?
If you've seen MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE you know the music's there – loud and in the foreground, not the background, because Lalo Schifrin is the sixth member of the Impossible Missions Force. His face may not be visible among Jim Phelps' dossiers but you can hear him every week, holding together by main strength and melody an intricate, cross cut tale of tension.
It's been that way since Lalo looked at a cut of the first picture and its many sequences without dialogue and said in – his soft, Latin flavored voice "I have some ideas?' And what ideas! So integral to the show did Lalo's themes be- come, that when the main title of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE was made, it was built around the music, not scored afterwards. Many times since then whole sequences of film have been handled the same way – the music dictating the editing.
A MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE album, like the series should be short on words and long on music. So listen to Lalo, but with a warning: this recording might not self-destruct in ten seconds, but you will likely blow your mind. – BRUCE GELLER
